One of the aesthetics I specialize in is the modern farmhouse style popularized by Joanna Gaines on HGTV’s Fixer Upper.  The great news is you don’t have to live on a farm to reflect this look and you don’t have to go to Waco to incorporate it into your home.

Board & Batten by On Point Construction ~ Photo & Staging by Audra Mehl, Grace 1972 Design

Elements of the farmhouse style include neutral furniture in warm fabrics, rustic or wood elements, vintage statement pieces, and a consistently soft color pallet. Some examples of my work within this style can be found in the following photos.

The following photos are from my successful retail shop, Grace 1972, that was open from February 2017 to August 2018.  Grace 1972 helped establish my style in the local Fargo/Moorhead design community, and it was from these roots that Grace 1972 Design was born.  (A detailed blog post on that journey can be found here titled Changing Grace.)

The following photos are also a great example of my style and aesthetic for creating a farmhouse look.

Sundays we are closed and that is the day I put new pieces on the floor and restyle. The shop faces south and west and I love this time of day in here! It reminds me of my parents’ farmhouse kitchen where the window faced west. It feels like home . . .
If you read my blog post Behind the Name ~ Grace 1972, you read about how my mom’s story inspired the name for the shop. These are one of her garlands that she makes for Grace 1972. I have it styled on my fireplace in my home as an illustration of one of the many ways you can add texture and interest by adding a garland in yours.
Meet Agnes! She is the big sister to Iris, (refer to my blog post Vintage Cabinet – The Story of Iris). Agnes (named after my great grandmother) is the most beautiful vintage cabinet. If someone doesn’t take her home for their flat screen tv, I am going to! 🙂 I think it would be so clever to hide your television behind these chicken wire doors when not in use (the shelves are removable) and make the focal point of your living room a beautiful vintage piece instead of a television. Who’s with me?
This is my favorite tablescape ever in the history tablescapes. These primitive wooden pieces are actually vintage ox yokes! How cool is that? I think I can see Pa Ingalls using them, seriously. Topped with century old canning jars, a tin bucket, dogwood branches and florals this centerpiece makes a unique statement for any home.
Versions of every piece of this vignette are available at Grace 1972 – from the white enamel pitcher to the antique clock and scale, you can easily recreate this look for your own home. (The pillows peeking out in the background are also a part of our inventory.)
My Valentine’s Day flowers from my dear husband….and a Grace pillow in the background. (I actually got this one dirty so I got to take it home for myself as I couldn’t sell it! I still love it.) He worked very hard to help me make Grace 1972 a reality . . . we did it, honey! 🙂
